In the present:
"A panther! What a great gift...thanks Void." Bassarov admires the large cat, and is fascinated by its beauty and strength.

I turn to my CO.
"Sir, I must protest... They have a right to assemble peacefully."
"Nadyezhda, if you question my authority again, I'm throwing you in the brig."
I shut my mouth.
One of the men fires a few shots into the air. I turn to him.
"HEY HEY, WHAT THE FU-"
A couple others get caught up in this, and begin firing their rifles into the air, while walking towards the protestors. I slap my forehead, and watch as the CO says nothing.
The crowd is shocked, and has little time to react before one of the soldiers lowers his weapon and starts firing at them. I sling my rifle into my hands, run towards him, and hit him in the back of the head with the butt of my gun. He collapses, and turns onto his back. I put my foot on his chest and aim my rifle at him.
"What the f**k are you doing??"
"NADYEZHDA!!!"
I look behind me. As loud as he said it, I could barely hear him over the gunshots.
My CO is furious. He charges towards me.
"Just what in the hell do you think you're doing, attacking a fellow soldier?? You are going on report, do you hear me Nadyezhda?!"
He grabs me by the collar, and drags me into the base.

Some pacifists start to cry as their own fall, but like sheep, remain still and silent before the butchers. The other protestors on the other hand, run, scattering for any shelter they can find, or just to leave the scene. Since Bassarov doesn't want to be arrested, he decides to run as well, leaving the pacifists behind.
He is pushed around and jostled through the fleeing horde of political deviants. In the rush of bodies, someone pushes him down. He falls to the ground and is trampled by someone.
As he sits on the ground, someone grabs him forcefully, pulling him to his feet. His heart skips a beat, but...it is only Guevara.
"Okay this was a mess, lets get our own people out of here. It seems the pacifists will stay until they are arrested. Fine by me, that is their choice."
The men leave, and try to round up fellow socialists. Luckily none were injurred or arrested.
At the end of the day, they go back to Guevara's apartment to meet.
"Hmmm, it the future let's not do any coalition work with pacifists..." Bassarov says to the group.

"...so I was brought up on charges, almost court martialed, and stuck on latrine duty for the next month. The only thing that saved me, was my family has been in the military for generations."
I sip my coffee.
"You know, if we keep meeting like this, somebody is going to get suspicious."

Flashback
"I suppose you are right. Personally I don't care. I have nothing to lose, and the way I look at it, a person has but one life, why waste it pleasing others." Bassarov takes a sip of his coffee. "What a horrible story. Would you like to take a walk? It might just give you an illusion of freedom. "

"I could use all of the illusion I can get. Real life is too nutsty for me."
I stand up.
"Walking sounds nice, I don't know anything outside of this coffee shop, and my girlfriend thinks I'm in Argentina again... So I'm afraid you'll have to lead the way."

"Well, we could walk a trail along Lake Onega." Bassarov suggests. He drinks his coffee and gets up, walking towards the door.

"It is only a few hour's drive from here." Bassarov says to Axum." Actually the machine is moving towards the river I think."

Ok, We need to get there as fast as humanly possible, If its going that way, I have a plan. It is electrically based, and that means that it can be overloaded. Once it crossses the Rhine River, we cut powerlines, lots of them, then guide them into the river. An electrical shock of that kind may slow him down.

"Sure that might work. I will go with you to the Rhine River and help with this project. We at least need to try something." Bassarov teleports them both to the river. He is not sure that a city sized machine will be affected by the electric shock, but at least it is something.

We will have to wait on its arrival, but I guess we should prepare for it. We can't cut it till the last second, or the power plant will reroute power around us. This is going to take split second timing.

Bassarov waits by the river, ready to cut down the lines. "So we have a few hours then, I guess we can talk. What is new with you? How have you been?"

"That sounds good..."
We head out the door.
"Well, lead the way, 'comrade'."
