This will be a thread for explaining socialism or asking questions about socialism.

Since the other thread titled 'socialism' is largely off topic, is it OK if I just erase the bugger, and have this one field the socialism stuff?

Well, since no one else seems to be getting things started, I might as well. Bassarov will no doubt be able to explain the basic outline of Socialism much better than myself, but here's what I think should happen in a Socialist economy:
The government takes three fourths of your money to pay for things such as free education through college(though colleges are still competitive), free healthcare, free utilities(the government will pay for the average amount of water and electricity that a house the size of yours with such and such many people living in it should use, but when you go over you pay it in bills), free food in the work place(be it both school and offices), benifits for the handicapped, things you need for work(such as a car if you can't walk there, or a computer if needed), etc. etc.
The industries and corporations become nationalized and prices are regulated by the government so as to prevent inflation. With any luck, comic books will again cost a nickle and minimum wage will go up slightly.
Your wages are still determined by what job you have and promotions and raises will be given depending on how hard you work, but no one will be making 5 bucks an hour, as you can't really get by on that. Minimum wage will go up greatly, hopefully it will anyway. If you're a doctor you'll make more than a garbage man, if you're a lawyer you'll make more than a 411 hotline person, etc. etc.
The money you are left with after the government's taxes will be to pay for your food outside the work place, as in breakfast and, on occasion, dinner; it'll be used for you to buy your excess stuff, like TVs and fancy clothes. Personally, while I believe utilities should be paid for, I think the house itself should be paid for by you, since you still should be able to get the house you want - assuming you can afford it.
That is MY definition of Socialism, the one I want to happen. Keep in mind Socialism is an economic theory and a government behind it would have to be decided, and so long as it's not dictatorship or the American "republic", then I'm fine with it, but that's beside the point of this thread.

I'll let someone else answer this one.
Most people, democrat or republican, for or against the war, would argue that America has a responsibility to stay in Iraq to rebuild the country, however long that will take.
Personally, I feel it was not our place to go there nor is it to remain there.
But I will let other members field this, since I am sure they have interesting and informed opinions on the matter.

It is against the rules for guests who do not otherwise identify themselves as members to post in the political forum. Please refrain from doing so again. Also, the purpose of this thread is to answer questions about socialism. We had a rather long discussion about Iraq in one of the other threads.
