I try the word a few times, before my pronunciation remotely resembles what it is supposed to sound like.
"'ow did you 'appen to join 'agana, Madmoiselle Raz? Growing up in ze g'etto must 'ave been difficult."

I nod my head. "That's nice of her..." I say.

Despair turns to Zero. "Will you take us back to your apartment. Erika is tired and needs rest."

"You can go ahead and sleep on my bed... I'll either sleep on my couch or Mischa's. It doesn't make me much difference." As long as they let me smoke indoors I don't care where I stay.
"Sure. Come on." I lead them to my small, spartan apartment. My table is covered with some dirty dishes and a couple full ashtrays. "Sorry about the mess..."

Erika and Despair walk back to Zero's apartment. Depair says nothing on the short walk. He thinks only of what he can do to make Erika feel less upset. He has a hard time dealing with her emotions sometimes. They enter the apartment and he feels some relief that she will be able to rest peacefully here, away from all distractions. "This living arrangement will be much more peaceful for you, Erika."

The first thing I notice is the smell; Zero obviously smokes a lot of cigarettes and never airs out the apartment but I say nothing, she is being more than nice enough to let me stay here. The mattress is small and the sheets untidy. "It's great." I say.

"That is good. I can not stay with you long since I must return to Red Infinity. Are you okay?"

I cough slightly. "I'll be fine. Tell Mitya that I'll see him when I can... But don't tell him about what happened to me..." I sniffle, then go to the room and lay down. Very soon I am asleep.

"It wasn't a ghetto in the Nazi sense or anything like that. I actually had more freedom than most kids did growing up. There's a high concentration of Jews in Capital City, because prior to the fall of the FRA, it was one of the only places on Earth where we could practice our religion openly, or at least more openly than the rest of the world. You should go to the Jewish quarter of Capital City some time. It has a lot of character. Sure, no one really had that much money, but everyone knew everyone else, and we all trusted each other. It was a very tightly knit community. It still is. I decided to join Hagana because I began sitting in on the weekly Zionist meetings, and got interested. As you know, Israel is a very important place for my people. Every year, at pesach, or passover as they call it in English, we hope to spend the next pesach in Jerusalem. Of course, that wish deals more with the coming of the messiah and the return to paradise than with a literal interpretation, but Jerusalem is still a very holy place. God willing, we will spend next year in Jerusalem, literally. We survived the Egyptians, the Hellenists, the Romans, The Babylonians, all of Europe during the Middle Ages, the Russians, the Germans, and years of more minor anti-semetism. With the help of Hashem, we will survive and outlive Red Infinity."
Raz pauses.
"Of course, we do not solely rely on Adonai. IMI is famous for making advanced weaponry after all," she admits.
"So, how did you become a French nationalist?"

I watch Erika fall asleep, then say to Despair "Before you say anything it's not a problem. I'd love to have a roommate for awhile. Care to talk for a bit?"

"Sure, we can talk. What would you like to talk about. I am not very good at conversations."

"Well neither am I..." I shut the door and light a cigarette, drag it and hold the smoke in as long as I can. Then I sigh. "If you had to choose between her and Red Infinity, which would you choose?"

Despair thinks for a moment. This is a hard decision to make. But he was created to serve Red Infinity. He would not be carrying out the purpose he was created for if he left. "I would choose Red Infinity. I was created to serve them and no individual is more important than everyone I was made to serve."

"Humankind is being served by Red Infinity. There has never been a better government. They take care of so many needs. There are no longer poor people and the diseased recieve care from the government. All elderly people are cared for as well, as are all children. As a whole, the world is better off now than it was before Red Infinity." Despair replies. "I will not leave Red Infinity which protects many lives for my own selfish interests."
