Elijah Debs is the son of the American Socialist Eugene Debs, who ran for president against Woodrow Wilson. His mother is an angel, though he does not know her well.
He never spent much time with his father either, since the American people would not have accepted the demi angel. Thus, he grew up on a farm in isolation from his parents, cared for by an old socialist woman who volunteered for the job.
When she died, he went off on his own, trying to conceal his identity as a half angel. This became difficult since he never aged. Therefore he had to move on every 10 years or so.
He has traveled the world for many centuries trying to find a place where he fit in, but having little luck. But throughout history his has involved himself with different socialist groups, although he could only stay there so long as no one suspected he was immortal.
He does not believe in the gods or the angels, only that they are beings with more power than most humans, and who unfairly govern the universe.
