Melinda grew up on a collective dairy farm in the midwestern part of what was the United States. She was born into a traditional family with traditional values. She has an older brother, and was very loyal to her parents. Her childhood taught her to work hard and care for others. Her mother was a poet and suffered from mental illness. This meant she spent much of her childhood mothering her mother. Her father was distant, but a good hard working man who worked on the collective without complaint. Her parents were Christians before the revolution and raised her to be a Christian as well. This was all done in secret because of Red Infinity's laws against religion. Her family keeps the Christian faith since it is a family tradition hundreds of years old. She grew up happy, but feeling trapped by her dependant mother and distant father, that is why when she was 18 she married an older man who was a member of the party. Her husband was cruel and psychologically abused her. She had two children with him, but after she divorced, he was given custody of them because of her religious beliefs. It was determined because she was a Christian that she was an unfit parent in the eyes of the state. She divorced her husband three years ago, and has not seen him or her children since. This makes her very sad but she is a strong woman and hopes that she will see them someday.
After the divorce, she found a job working for a secret Christian pre school. She enjoyed this job and it gave her new hope. Eventually Red Infinity burnt down the school and arrested the teacher. She was one of the teachers arrested that day. She was send to Siberia where she now works in a labor camp.
She never considered herself a feminist, since she grew up thinking that there were roles for men and women, but, Red Infinity's political re-education has taught her that genders should have equal rights. Her life experiences being exploited by her husband and used by men have taught her that maybe there is some truth to Red Infinity's message about gender equality.
So she is a reluctant feminists. She is a reformist feminists even though her politics are often reactionary. She believes in Capitalism, is against abortion, is against homosexuality and sex before marraige. Even though she is very conservative, she believes that everyone should be treated fairly, is a strong advocate of the welfare of children, and that women should be able to have any job that men have..at the same pay. Above everything, she believes that people should try to live peaceably with one another and that people should be free to practice their religions.
